Any place that was occupied by the Soviet Union its withdrawal left a confused citizenry who had hopes for whatever this thing called Democracy was. Here in Mongolia Democracy took hold. The people were occupied by China and then by the Soviets. The hero of independence who led Mongolia away from the USSR was murdered 6 years later. Sound familiar? Ukraine? North Korea?
The second thing they left was depressing blocks that pretended to be architecture.

At times a block got a new more interesting facade

But even new buildings are blocks.

Lately there is a glimmer of hope that things are changing.

Like most ex-USSR countries there’s no love for Russia. Little wonder, in a strongly Buddhist country it is an unpopular move to demolish all the temples amd slaughter 40000 monks. How can governments rule by terror?
