Mostar

It is so amazing to me that 10 years after a genocidal war people are taking tourists tk the sites where their families were slaughtered. Do you think after the Pelopennisian wars that people were hawking pictures of Helen and key rings of Achilles’s heel? Even the guide who lived through the war was still visibly upset by it. The current government has a Catholic president , a Muslim president and an Orthodox president and none can agree while corruption is so rife that the people pray to be admitted to the European union. But the EU won’t let Bosnia in because it’s too corrupt. So everyone suffers. There is a kind of Bully’s Alley

Where the Serbs are allowed a shadow government and all of the animosities simmer. The people waited for more than a year starving for the UN to come—which they call United Nothing. Only after an ancient bridge was destroyed did anyone stop the massacres. So to me this place is a powder keg. Physically beautiful with stone bridge and buildings but souless and hovering above real hope and peace
