Final word on war pictures

I am haunted by a close up image of a shell shocked woman. She is staring vacantly at the camera, her eyes like saucers

She is dressed in scarves and a blouse with a scarf on her head , her hands folded across her chest. She looks at something inside herself not at us. Her long nails are painted a beautiful shade of coral.

This is what gave me pause

This woman is in a near waking coma yet someone took the time to do her nails. To make her pretty

. To give her pleasure if she chanced to look at her hands

Even in the midst of war and the havoc it wreaks,

people take a moment for beauty
