Naoshima is not a common world art destination. It is a tiny hilly island . One 711 convenience store. 2 grocery stores. One taxi who stops at 8pm. BUT. . the art. All so different. It perches on a grassy knoll overlooking the ferry port. 
Art to me should transport the viewer, the reader, the listener, the aficionado to a place unintended . It is the surprise response elicited by the interaction between the audience and the work that defies expectation. True art cannot be predictable because all of us bring a unique set of life experience to the union between us and the work. It is actually the response that is the creation. This sculpture pulled me into a place I did not expect. Art in naoshima 1

Art that embeds into the landscape is truly wonderful.
Here in Easthampton Massachusetts we have a semi-permanent installation called “Art in the Orchard”, located in the orchard where we get our fall apples and out year-round eggs.
Local artists create works for the orchard, which renew/cycle every two years. Some remain semi-permanent, some are put up and taken down, and some succumb, as intended to the elements.
The most moving of all these exhibits was in a far corner of the orchard, where a local artist had created prone human figures out of sod, and seeded them with grass seed.
What followed over six months was an extraordinary process where the figures both “grew” (the grass germinated), but also became less distinct and more integrated into the landscape.
